Economic Immigration Policy in Australia and Canada:
What Lessons
Can We Learn?

   Monday May 12, 2008, from 11:45  a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Fairmont Château Laurier, 1 Rideau Street, Ottawa

Lunch will be served

The recent federal budget contained significant changes to the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act aimed at modernizing the immigration system and making it more responsive to Canada's labour market needs. Under this new system, skilled worker applicants would be fast-tracked and matched with available jobs in Canada. These proposed changes have spurred a broader debate about our economic immigration policy and how to improve labour market outcomes for immigrants. Australia, which a few years ago was facing difficulties similar to Canada's, has fundamentally reformedits immigrant selection process. In a paper soon to be released by the IRPP, Lesleyanne Hawthorne compares Canadian and Australian policy and recent immigrants' labour market outcomes, drawing some important lessons for Canada.

The Institute for Research on Public Policy is pleased to invite you to join IRPP President Mel Cappe, author Lesleyanne Hawthorne (University of Melbourne), Howard Duncan (Metropolis) and Michael Murphy (Canadian Chamber of Commerce) to discuss economic immigration policy challenges and solutions.
