Description:
The Canadian Multiculturalism Act commits the Government of Canada
to ensuring the full participation of all Canadians in the social,
cultural, economic and political facets of Canadian society. This
panel will explore whether newcomers to Canada and minorities in
Canada have been able to participate fully in the elected bodies
that set the rules by which we agree to live. In particular, panellists
will be drawn from a team of researchers exploring political participation
in eleven Canadian cities (Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Regina,
Saskatoon, Winnipeg, Toronto, Hamilton, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax).
Panellists will explore participation of newcomers and minorities
in three orders of government in these cities and will explore causes
and consequences of the startling under- representation of these
Canadians.
This panel will close the 18th Biennial CESA Conference
