Access and Equity Research on Health Services Project

Funded by Health Canada, this project seeks to identify the types of research needed in order to produce improvements in the health care system's response to the needs of diverse communities. For more information please contact Doris Rajana at drajan@sympatico.ca

The New Canadian Children and Youth Study

This study involving the Montreal, Toronto, and Prairie Centres will examine the needs of immigrant and refugee children. The Toronto portion of the study has started with a focus on the Chinese and former Yugoslavian communities, the Montreal study will begin shortly with a focus on the Arab, West Asian and Latin American communities, and the Prairie portion of the study focussing on the Kurdish and Vietnamese communities is expected to begin when funding becomes available. Vancouver

The Vancouver Centre has launched a National and International Internship Program. Graduate students are paired with policy partners to research a mutually agreed topic. To date, 3 placements have been made: one in Ottawa (HRDC), one in Germany (IZA), and one in Malaysia (CIDA). For more information please contact Don DeVoretz at devoretz@sfu.ca

Montreal

Danielle Juteau has organized a workshop on Social Differentiation for May 14 and 15. The workshop will bring researchers and policy makers together to discuss ongoing research. For more information please contact Danielle Juteau at danielle.juteau@umontreal.ca


Federal Partner Update

Annual Report

The Project Team will be producing an annual report covering 1998-99. The report will describe achievements for the project as a whole, highlight strategic issues, set out the project team's plans and report on past actions. The report should be available by mid-summer.

Federal Partners on Centre Committees

As a result of an initiative to create more opportunities for contact between policy makers and researchers, membership on key boards and committees has been extended to federal representatives by the Prairie and Vancouver Centres. An earlier News Flash reported on changes at the Montréal Centre. New representatives at the Prairie and Vancouver centres are:

  • Sylvain Côté from Human Resources Development Canada has joined the Vancouver Management Board.
  • Julie Dompierre from Status of Women Canada and Dina Juras from Health Canada have joined the Board of Governors of the Prairie Centre.
  • A representative from the regional office of Canadian Heritage will join the Program Committee of the Prairie Centre.

Health Canada

Health Canada held the annual meeting for its Metropolis Working Group. This group includes representatives from various branches and from the regions. This meeting precedes a meeting with lead health researchers planned for the fall.

Objectives set by the working group for the current year include:

  • Strengthening linkages with centres
  • Facilitating networks between centres
  • Regional office involvement
  • Enhancing communication within Health Canada
  • Fostering the use/application of research within Health Canada.
  • Publishing the environmental scan of health research
  • Pursue mutual interests with Canadian Heritage

Status of Women

Status has recently released a report entitled, "Policy Options to Improve Standards for Garment Workers in Canada and Internationally." To order copies please call (613) 995-3980.

The Global Alliance Against Trafficking in Women made a presentation to federal departments on April 12. For more information please contact Julie Dompierre at (613) 995-3071

Canadian Heritage

Each regional office has been asked to appoint an officer to liaise with Metropolis. The first teleconference among regional representatives and headquarters staff is planned for the end of April. Regular contact among these representatives should significantly augment departmental involvement in Metropolis. The representatives will also meet in person during national staff training sessions planned for May 1999.


Upcoming Events

Dubrovnik

The Dubrovnik seminar, "Youth in the Plural City Individualized and Collectivized Identity Projects" will take place May 24-29, 1999.

Twenty five theoretical and empirical papers will be presented to an audience of 30-40 participants from Canada, Sweden, England, Australia, Slovenia, France, Portugal, Germany, and Norway. The papers will be circulated in advance to encourage discussion. Canadian participants include Denise Helly from the Montreal Centre, Yvonne Hébert from the Prairie Centre, Jeff Bullard from Canadian Heritage and Helen Ralston from St Mary's University. Social Justice Seminar

The Social Justice Seminar organized by the University of British Columbia's Centre for Policy Studies in Education will be held in Ottawa May 14-15, 1999. The goal of the seminar will be to identify research gaps and to establish networks of researchers, policy makers and NGOs interested in tackling those gaps in four areas: Human Rights, Education, Legislative Frameworks, and Reconciliation.

Two background literature reviews have been prepared and are availalbe on the Metropolis website. The following background papers are in preparation and will also be posted on the Metropolis website prior to the seminar.

  • Human Rights: Using Conflict Creatively - Jim Walker (University of Waterloo)
  • Education: Moving Past Anti-Racism Education - Roxana Ng (OISE/U of T)
  • Legislative Frameworks: Hate Crime Legislation Around the World - Julian Roberts (University of Ottawa/University of Toronto)
  • Reconciliation: Models For Handling Past Injustices - Rosemary Nagy (University of Toronto)

Fourth International Metropolis Conference

The Fourth International Metropolis Conference will be held in Washington D.C. December 8-11 1999. Like the Third International Conference, this conference will combine plenary sessions with a policy-research focus with highly focussed, results-oriented workshops. Information on the plenary sessions will be featured in the next issue of News Flashes. The workshops planned for this conference are listed below. Please contact the listed workshop hosts for the sessions you are interested in attending.

Fourth National Metropolis Conference

The Fourth National Metropolis Conference is planned for March 22 to 25, 2000 at the Metropolitan Hotel in Toronto. Six committees have been created to coordinate different aspects of the conference. Summary Proceedings of Third National Metropolis Conference

The Project Team is working with the Vancouver Centre to produce summary proceedings of the Conference. The document is scheduled for distribution in June 1999. In the interim, some papers and presentations appear on the Vancouver section of the Metropolis website (www.canada.metropolis.net).

CERIS Working Paper Series

Metropolis has been nominated for the Institute of Public Administration of Canada's (IPAC) award for innovative management in the public service.

Prairie Centre

The Prairie Centre has seen changes to its Board of Governors and Program Committee:

Board of Governors:

  • Mr. Fariborz Birjandian (Calgary Catholic Immigration Society) has replaced Ms. Susan Coombes as a community representative.
  • Dr. Shiva Halli has replaced Dr. Leo Driedger as the University of Manitoba representative.
  • Julie Dompierre (SWC) and Dina Juras (Health) have joined as Federal representatives.

  • Paul Gingrich has left the Program Committee.
  • A regional representative from Canadian Heritage will join the Committee.
