Federal Partner Update

Canadian Heritage

The 11th Annual Report on the Operation of the Canadian Multiculturalism Act has been tabled. Once again, Metropolis has been singled out as a best practice. In addition to the information on how federal departments and agencies are trying to meet the objectives of The Canadian Multiculturalism Act, there is also an introductory essay on diversity in Canadian "EthniCities" which provides a variety of useful statistics. Copies of the Report can be obtained at multi_canada@pch.gc.ca

Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC)

Ian Melzer from the research division tabled a paper for discussion at the Fourth National Metropolis Conference in Toronto entitled, "Housing Conditions of Immigrants." It can be obtained by e-mail at imelzer@cmhc-schl.gc.ca

CMHC has a website packed with information pertinent to Metropolis members. Most notably documents of interest include:

  • Summary of the Corporate Plan
  • Canada Housing Information Centre

Citizenship and Immigration

As most members of the Metropolis network will be aware. The Department has been very busy over the last two years preparing new legislation. Both the new Citizenship and the new Immigration Acts have now been tabled in the House of Commons. Copies of the Bills can be found on the parliamentary website at http://www.parl.gc.ca/36/main-e.htm

Health Canada

The Health Canada Metropolis Group consists of corporate and regional representatives across various Branches within Health Canada. On March 2-3, the Group convened for its third annual strategic planning session. Included in the agenda were discussions with senior policy advisors, with a Metropolis researcher concerning the policy research process, with representatives from three funding organizations (Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada, the Canadian Health Services Research Foundation and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research) to explore the changing landscape of health research funding, with representatives from the Metropolis Team at Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC), for an update on the Metropolis Project and possible future directions, and with representatives at Canadian Heritage, Multiculturalism Program, to exchange information on issues of mutual interest. The two-day meeting culminated in the identification of strategic priorities to guide the work of the Group over the coming year.

On March 25, members of the Health Canada Working Group who attended the Fourth National Metropolis Conference in Toronto met with lead health researchers across the four Centres of Excellence, and with Dr. Beiser, Director of CERIS, to discuss national issues across the health domain, including the New Canadian Child and Youth study, the forthcoming Metropolis review within Health Canada (which will provide the basis for a corporate response to the CIC consultation exercise), planning for future health workshops at Metropolis conferences, and policy research interests of Health Canada, particularly its Health Protection Branch. The meeting also provided a forum for discussion between lead health researchers and several representatives from the Centres of Excellence for Women's Health (funded by Health Canada) on gender and immigration health research issues and opportunities.

After a number of false starts the Requests For Proposals (RFP) has been posted on the Canadian Heritage website. In addition, the Multiculturalism Program is proud to announce "Explorations 2000 - Research Development Grants." A pilot initiative to help multicultural organizations develop research capacity. Information on both RFPs is available on the Canadian Heritage website at www.pch.gc.ca or from maria Tiley at maria_tiley@pch.gc.ca

    Metropolis Comings and Goings

    Project Team

Héléne Bertrand has left the Metropolis Project Team to pursue other opportunities. Her good humoured efficiency, despite our ludicrous timeframes, will be missed by everyone in the Metropolis network who has worked with her.

Steve Morris and Natalie Ethier have joined the Project Team. They bring a wealth of experience and will greatly enrich the team.

Emmanuelle Lebeau and Ayesha Rekhi have rejoined the Team for a few months before they take up their formal postings with the Foreign Service. Ayesha is headed to Hong Kong and Emmanuelle to Guatamala.

    Centres

Dr. Derek Hum (Economics, University of Manitoba) has accepted an invitation to visit and lecture at the University of Western Sydney in Australia from July-August 2000. Dr. Hum's visit is related to his collaborative work with Dr. Anis Choudhury (University of Western Sydney) comparing immigrants in Canada and Australia.
