Cohen, Rina (1991): Women of Color in White Households: Coping Strategies of Live-in Domestic Workers. Qualitative Sociology 14(2, Summer), 197-215.
Data obtained via interviews with 50 live-in colored domestics working for white employers in a major Canadian city are drawn on to explore their coping styles. It is argued that immigration & labor policies enable middle-class families to employ a captive, vulnerable group of Third World women in an exploitative situation that perpetuates gender, class, & racial discrimination. Three types of coping strategies are identified: external - mobilizing community resources & ties with people outside the labor situation, internal - utilizing resources from within work situations, & nitive - altering the definition of the situation. By demonstrating the power resources of the oppressed, results attempt to overcome the powerlessness bias in the literature on domestics. 49 References. Adapted from the source document.
