Conventional economic base
analysis is used to explore the relation between urban economic
development & ethnic capital accumulation in Montreal,
Quebec, using available data for the years 1842, 1861, 1881,
1931, & 1971. Three employment sectors were favored by ethnic
immigrants: transportation services, city building, &
domestic & personal services. Surges in these sectors
provided the opportunity to rapidly expand the ethnic community's
economic base, & to close income gaps. An attempt is made to
generalize the Montreal & other observed examples of ethnic
occupational specialization, using a broad analytical framework.
