Olson, Sherry (1991): Ethnic Strategies in the Urban Economy. Canadian-Ethnic-Studies/ Etudes-Ethniques-au-Canada 23(2), 39-64.
Conventional economic base analysis is used to explore the relation between urban economic development & ethnic capital accumulation in Montreal, Quebec, using available data for the years 1842, 1861, 1881, 1931, & 1971. Three employment sectors were favored by ethnic immigrants: transportation services, city building, & domestic & personal services. Surges in these sectors provided the opportunity to rapidly expand the ethnic community's economic base, & to close income gaps. An attempt is made to generalize the Montreal & other observed examples of ethnic occupational specialization, using a broad analytical framework. 6 Tables, 73 References. I. Shagrir
